I was out driving today, and the album Songbird by Eva Cassidy came up on the iPod. On this blissfully rainy day in Austin, Wade in the Water seemed particularly appropriate. This is some of the best blues singing you'll ever hear.
Following Wade in the Water on that album is Cassidy's rendition of the classic song Autumn Leaves , popularized in the US by Johnny Mercer and Jo Stafford. I almost had to pull over so I could do nothing but listen. What an incredible talent, and this performance contains some of the most amazing phrasing I've ever heard. Listen to how long she holds some of these notes. She makes you wait for it. My god, this is remarkable singing.
As is often the case, the candle that burns brightest burns shortest, and Cassidy fell victim to cancer at the age of 33.
